Homemade Popcorn

Homemade Popcorn

17 Jan 2024

5 MINS

3 MINS

Makes 4-6 cups

INGREDIENTS

100g popcorn kernels
30ml vegetable oil
Salt, to taste
Optional toppings: melted butter, grated cheese, nutritional yeast, cinnamon, or caramel sauce

METHOD

1. Place a large, heavy-bottomed pot on the stove over medium heat.

2. Pour the vegetable oil into the pot and add a few popcorn kernels. Cover the pot with a lid. Wait for the test kernels to pop; this indicates that the oil is hot enough.

3. Once the test kernels pop, quickly add the remaining popcorn kernels to the pot in an even layer.

4. Cover the pot with the lid and shake it gently to ensure an even distribution of heat. This helps prevent burning and ensures that all kernels pop..

5. Continue to shake the pot occasionally while the corn pops. When the popping slows down to about 2 seconds between pops, remove the pot from heat.

6. Carefully remove the lid, keeping it away from your face to avoid steam. Season the popcorn with salt to taste.

7. Add your favorite toppings while the popcorn is still warm. Drizzle melted butter, sprinkle grated cheese or nutritional yeast for a savory flavor, or add a touch of sweetness with cinnamon or caramel sauce.

HANDY TIP

To prevent popcorn from getting soggy when adding butter or other toppings, spread the popcorn on a baking sheet in a single layer. This allows any excess moisture to evaporate, keeping the popcorn crisp. Experiment with different seasonings and toppings, such as chili powder, garlic powder, or truffle salt for a unique twist.
For a sweet and savory mix, toss popcorn with a combination of melted butter, honey, and a sprinkle of sea salt.
