Slow Cooker Apple Cinnamon Porridge

Slow Cooker Apple Cinnamon Porridge

3 Jan 2024

5 MINS

Low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours

Serves 6-8 people

INGREDIENTS
200g steel-cut oats
1 litre milk (dairy or plant-based)
500ml water
3 large apples, peeled, cored, and diced
50g brown sugar (adjust to taste)
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional toppings: chopped nuts, dried fruits, maple syrup, yogurt

METHOD

1. Grease the slow cooker insert with a bit of butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking

2. In the slow cooker, combine steel-cut oats, milk, water, diced apples, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, salt, and vanilla extract. Stir well to combine.

3.Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours. Stir occasionally, especially during the last hour, to prevent the oats from sticking to the bottom.

4. About 30 minutes before serving, check the consistency of the oatmeal. If it's too thick, you can add more milk or water to reach your desired thickness.

5.Once the oats are tender and the mixture is creamy, stir well and serve hot.

6. Customise your bowl with toppings like chopped nuts, dried fruits, a drizzle of maple syrup, or a dollop of yogurt.

HANDY TIP

For added flavour, consider adding a handful of raisins or chopped dried fruits along with the apples. This will infuse the porridge with a natural sweetness..
