At Tower, we love our planet as much as you do. Together we are growing and restoring forests across Zambia’s Copperbelt in order to reverse deforestation.

WHAT DOES WEFOREST DO?

WeForest, backed by a scientific network, is growing a movement of responsible companies, large and small, that are committed to having a positive impact for people and our planet. WeForest works with communities, local organizations and NGOs to develop scalable reforestation projects, demonstrating that restoring our degraded landscapes is possible if we all work together.

HOW MUCH IS NEEDED TO SOLVE CLIMATE CHANGE?

The IPCC special report from 2019 estimates that approximately 730 billion tonnes of CO2 must be actively removed from the atmosphere during the 21st century in order to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Afforestation and reforestation measures could remove approximately 29% of the total needed - around 210 billion tonnes.

Project Summary

In the Luanshya district, WeForest works with hundreds of small-scale farmers, providing them with training and tools in return for setting aside part of their lands to regenerate the miombo woodland. As a result, they receive higher incomes, diversify their economic activities and learn new skills. The project also links them to local companies to ensure their honey gets sold. This way, the project becomes more sustainable, which makes the beneficiaries less dependent on WeForest's contribution.

In June 2021, a successful third party audit took place and means the project is now verified to the Forest Ecosystem Restoration standard. This standard was developed by Preferred by Nature to enable projects to demonstrate alignment with and support for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and covers technical, environmental, social and economic criteria.
