Top Five Alternative Pancake FillingsIf you hadn’t already guessed from the slew of jokes doing the rounds on social media/items on breakfast TV this morning – IT’S PANCAKE DAY! Millions of you will be (if you haven’t already) rustling up delicious pancakes this Shrove Tuesday but the big question is; ‘What will you be putting on them?’ You can’t go wrong with traditional favourites sugar and lemon juice, jam, and golden syrup, but there’s a whole world of weird and wonderful toppings out there. We’ve pulled together our favourite alternative pancake fillings here at Tower HQ, so check them out for a bit of Pancake Day inspiration… Peanut Butter & Honey The ultimate filling for those with more than a sweet tooth, this filling isn’t especially healthy but boy is it tasty. Some might find it a bit too sickly sweet and if we’re honest, it can get a bit difficult to swallow after a couple of mouthfuls. But, if you like squelchy deliciousness then this is the one for you. Just don’t give it to youngsters as you might find yourself sponging it from clothes and carpets for days to come. Smoked Salmon Fish…on a pancake? Yes, we’re not mental – it’s rather amazing if truth be known. The pancake often gets pigeonholed as a sweet dish but they’re actually very versatile and taste absolutely fantastic with savoury toppings. Make your pancakes as normal, add a slice or two of shop-bought smoked salmon, chopped dill and a good quality cream cheese (not Dairylea or Primula), roll up and enjoy! Sweet Beetroot & Cherry Much like the above recipe, this one seems a bit leftfield on first glance but you’ll just have to trust us. The flavours really complement each other and it’s really quite refreshing for the palette also. Simply add ¼ cup of sugar and ½ cup of water into a Tower saucepan, throw in x12 pitted cherries, grate a whole cooked beetroot, add that and simmer until gloopy enough and then spoon over your pancakes. We recommend serving a nice blob of lemon sorbet alongside it too. Fantastic. Full English Everyone likes a fry up, and everyone likes pancakes – so why not combine the two? A mouthwatering if not particularly healthy embellishment for your pancakes, this topping certainly gets the tastebuds tingling. Lay a rasher of crispy bacon on each pancake, add sautéed mushrooms and red onion, then grate a generous helping of cheddar over the lot. Roll up, wolf down and then make a note to do a double session in the gym next time you’re there. Boozecakes Another one we wouldn’t advise sharing with the kids but definitely one we’d urge you to try. Simple to make and with endless combinations, drizzling your favourite tipple over your pancakes can give them a bit of pizzazz. We recommend chocolate chips scattered on still warm pancake, chopped fresh strawberries and kiwi fruit and then a liberal splash of Bailey’s, Kahlua or Sabrah.
