Student Essentials: Tooling Up Your Student Kitchen

In just a couple of weeks, thousands of young folk across the land will be packing up their worldly possessions and heading off to new cites to embark upon three years of hard study/hedonism (delete as applicable). Yes, freshers week is nearly upon us and if you’re heading off to university, that generally means new digs to be found, new friends to be made, and new part-time jobs to be secured. Hopefully you’ll have ticked at least two of the above off your to-do list by now, but there’s one other important thing to sort out when you big move; kitchen stuff! Kitting out your student kitchen adequately during your time at uni is paramount, especially given that most of your time will be spent hitting the books and/or bars hard. You need to have the right gear to enable you to whip up tasty, nutritious meals in a flash, all without breaking the bank. Don’t worry though, we’ve made a handy checklist:

The Science of Appliance

Planning is important if you want to tool up your student kitchen so that it serves the inhabitants of your student house well. If moving into approved university accommodation or halls of residence, check if kitchen appliances are provided. If they aren’t make sure you invest in a decent, time-saving microwave for reheating left-overs, a sturdy kettle for all the cuppas you’ll be brewing up, and a reliable toaster for those hangover-curing bacon sandwiches! Don’t Pan-ic

Choosing your weapons wisely will serve you well when cooking at uni. Buying a couple of durable, versatile pans rather than several bargain basement ones is the way to go. We recommend investing in large, durable high-sided frying pan or wok that can be used for just about anything from steaming veg and fish, to deep-frying chips, and even cooking scrambled eggs. Team this with a selection of saucepans (three is the magic number) for veg and the like and you’re covered. The Tower pans below all feature superior non-stick coatings, so you’ll use less oil and there’s less cleaning up to do afterwards. Our top picks from our Cerastone and Cerasure ranges are below - click the images to find out more.

Slow Life

Surviving on a budget is key when you’re a student so making food go further is important. A great way to make the most of your meals is to plan in advance and cook things in bulk that will either keep until the next day or can be frozen and enjoyed at a later date. Chilli Con Carne, stews, casseroles and curries all fit this bill and can all be prepared using a slow cooker or multi cooker. These versatile appliances might be a little bit more expensive than your standard kitchen items, but the initial outlay is worth it thanks to the time-saving simplicity they offer. Just throw your ingredients in and leave it to work its magic. Once your meal is ready, you can transfer what you don’t eat to a storage container and have it for dinner tomorrow! In The Mix

Student life is so hectic that it can often be difficult to stick to healthy eating – getting your five-a-day can be hard when you’ve only got a 15 minute window between lectures, the gym, sports practice and a social in the student union. For this reason, we’d recommend splashing out on some sort of blender or food processor – they come in handy for making fruit and veg-based smoothies as well as saving  time when preparing nutritious soups and those curries and chillies you’ll be making in your slow cooker! Find out more about the three awesome appliances below by clicking the images. Follow this advice and your kitchen shouldn’t let you down during the whirlwind of student life.
