Retro Recipe Revival: Magical Mulled Wine
Staff at Tower HQ happened upon something rather quirky whilst getting the Christmas decorations out – a Tower cookbook from yesteryear packed full of popular slow-cooker recipes of the day. Taken from a promotional recipe book packaged with the iconic Tower Auto Slo-Cooker sold throughout the early to mid-80s, the dusty old tome has provided some culinary inspiration. So, given that slow-cooking and pressure cooking is making a come-back, we thought we’d update a few of the meals found within, updating them to modern tastes but maintaining a nod to the originals in a new series Retro-Recipe Revival.With Christmas being just around the corner and wintry evenings well and truly here we thought that we’d continue our theme of Christmassy content with this week’s Retro Recipe Revival and bring to you a fantastic, easy to make recipe for tasty mulled wine. As ever, the recipe has been inspired by Tower Cookbooks of old, only with a modern twist. So, have a quick break from putting the decorations, fire up your slow cooker and get ready to rustle up a festive favourite that’ll have your Christmas guests coming back for more…

- x2 bottles dry red wine (we recommend using a Cabernet Sauvignon)
- x1 cup golden syrup
- x1 cup water
- x1 square (8 inches) double-thickness cheesecloth
- Peel from x1 large orange
- Zest of x1 lime
- x1 cinnamon stick, broken into 2 or 3 pieces
- x8 whole cloves
- x1 whole nutmeg
- Orange slices
- Make sure your Tower Slow-Cooker’s crockpot is clean and free from residue from previously cooked ingredients.
- Add the red wine, golden syrup and water in the crockpot.
- Rinse cheesecloth under the cold tap and wring out any excess and water.
- Place cheesecloth on a dry, clean surface and place the orange peel, lime zest, nutmeg, cinnamon stick halves, and cloves in the centre of the cheesecloth.
- Pinch each corner of the cheesecloth between thumb and forefinger and scrunch together to form a parcel.
- Tie securely with cotton string (or cable tie if you have one) and add to slow cooker, replace appliance lid and cook on HIGH for 2 to 2 ½ hours.
- Once the cooking time has elapsed, remove and discard the cheesecloth spice bag then use a ladle to decant the mulled wine into mugs or heatproof glasses.
- Garnish each glass with thinly sliced orange.
