Whether it’s for a quick weekday dinner or to make your favourite weekend cinema snack, our microwaves are one of our most used kitchen appliances. Being in constant use though can mean that they can become a little neglected when it comes to cleaning but cleaning your trusty microwave doesn’t have to be a hassle.

We’re here to share some of our favourite tips for cleaning your microwave, without the need for harsh cleaners and using things that you’ll already have in your kitchen cupboards, to give your beloved microwave some much needed TLC and get it back to its sparkling clean glory.

One of the best ways to loosen tough dried on food debris is with nothing more than steam. Simply fill a microwavable bowl with 2 cups of water and place into your microwave. Cook on high for 3 minutes, then leave to sit for around 5 minutes with the door closed to allow the steam to soften any particularly stubborn areas. Then, simply take a clean, dry dishcloth and wipe the interior and the cooking plate for a sparkling finish.

Lemon Fresh

Working along the same principle as steam, this method works by loosening tough, dried on areas while the natural cleaning properties of lemon help to amp up this process by dissolving stubborn debris. Simply take a lemon, cut in half and squeeze the juice into a microwave safe bowl. Add ½ cup of water to the bowl and microwave on high for 3 minutes to allow the water to reach boiling point. Leave to stand for 5 minutes with the door closed, then carefully remove the bowl and wipe the inside of the microwave with a cloth.  The easy way to achieve a citrusy fresh, ultra-clean result.

Still struggling with a few stubborn patches? Simply dip the cloth into the lemon-juice and water mixture and apply directly the spot, scrubbing to remove.

Vinegar and Steam

Vinegar is another natural cleaning product that you probably have lurking in your kitchen cupboards and its ideal for this kind of task. Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar to a microwavable bowl with 2 cups of water. Drop a cocktail stick into the bowl – this will prevent the mixture from bubbling over and concentrate any bubbles that do form around the cocktail stick. Heat the mixture on a medium heat for 5-10 minutes- 5 is great for a quicker clean but 10 is perfect for times when only a deep clean will do! Leave the bowl to sit for a further 5 minutes, then carefully remove and wipe away any debris with a sponge.
